Danai Gurira to Reprise Her Role in Wakanda TV Series on Disney+

Danai Gurira, famed for her roles on The Walking Dead and Black Panther, will be reprising her role as Okoye (general of the Dora Milaje) in the upcoming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and her character will also be part of a spin-off series about Wakanda on Disney+, according to Deadline. Whether or not this is the same Wakanda spin-off announced in February 1, 2021 or it is an entirely new series focusing on the Okoye character remains to be seen. What we do know is that Ryan Coogler and his company, Proximity Media, will be heavily involved in the creative process, if not directly then through a producer capacity. Earlier in 2020, Danai Gurira also signed a deal with ABC Studios. This is great news as Okoye and the Dora Milaje, an elite group of female bodyguards and Wakandan special forces, are a fantastic presence in the world of Black Panther and much more than "Grace Jones looking chicks with spears."

The last we saw of Okoye in the MCU, she was (spoilers) battling alternate Thanos' minions in the epic final Battle of Earth at the end of Avengers Endgame, fighting alongside the Dora Milaje and King T'Challa himself after having perished from The Blip from Thanos' snap. Most recently this year, we saw a very cool cameo by three members of the Dora Milaje in an episode of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier in Latvia to arrest Helmut Zemo, after learning he had escaped from prison. It makes sense that they would have a small presence in the world of Bucky Barnes as a result of his connection to Wakanda in Captain America: Civil War and the subsequent events of the final two Avengers movies. As far as Wakanda plotlines go, it is pretty much up in the air. Perhaps more inner tribe conflict could rise up again to challenge the throne, although we know from the first film that the Jabari tribe has made peace with the Wakandan monarch.

As far as Danai Gurira, we all know she is more than capable of the spotlight of her own character in a TV series. Before she was Okoye, general and head of Wakandan armed forces and intel, she was fan favorite Michonne on The Walking Dead from 2012 to 2020. Easily my favorite part of the series was watching this bad-ass woman swing that katana around like a dark ninja slicing the heads of walkers left and right. And we all know she is appropriately qualified of handling herself in a dramatic scene, as well, having all of that stage experience as a playwright and an actor of the stage. What I'm most looking forward to in the Wakanda series is definitely seeing more of her character take the lead in plot lines and taking offense in conflicts as opposed to reacting and defending her homeland. There's a wealth of story and character to mine from in this world so the possibilities seem to be endless. What are you guys looking forward to the most about the Wakanda series?

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is scheduled to be released on July 8, 2022.
