Outside the Wire Trailer is Intense, Drops on Netflix January 2021

Updated: Dec 16, 2020

Anthony Mackie is keeping very busy these days since Avengers: Endgame concluded in 2019. The list went on with Point Blank (2019), Altered Carbon (2020), and in 2021 he has The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the upcoming Ogun for Netflix, and now the sci-fi action thriller Outside the Wire. The trailer just dropped and reveals a release date of January 15, 2021 on Netflix. Between The Old Guard and Extraction earlier this year, it seems as though Netflix is gaining a lot of momentum with homegrown original action thrillers not based on any other property and more power to them. And between Point Blank, Altered Carbon, Black Mirror, Ogun, and this film, it seems Netflix is all in on the business of Anthony Mackie. And that's terrific news.

Outside the Wire stars Anthony Mackie and Damson Idris (Snowfall) but the coolest thing about the trailer is not only the kinetic thrill of the intense The Raid-esque action sequences, but the fact that (spoilers for the trailer) Anthony Mackie's character is a proficient android officer who absolutely kicks ass. The premise reminds me of an old FOX show called Almost Human where Michael Ealy played an android cop opposite Karl Urban. It was cancelled after one season but Ealy seemed like perfect casting and certainly had lots of fun with the action oriented role. Here in the trailer, Mackie shows us why he is an elite action star with brutal stunt work and the intensity of his presence and line delivery.

According to his wikipedia, Anthony Mackie worked as an understudy to Don Cheadle in the 2002 play Talk. Which makes sense now when you watch their chemistry in the Avengers films come almost as second hand nature. Mackie has always been a fine dramatic actor, but it was Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker (2008) and Michael Bay's Pain & Gain (with Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson) that elevated him into action star status. And of course when he was cast as The Falcon in Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), the rest was history and he hasn't slowed down ever since. I, for one, am looking forward to his bright future as a Black Action Star.
